Over-50 and Struggling to Find Work? Why So Many Australians Are Being Left Behind

If you’re over 50 and looking for work in Australia, chances are you’ve already discovered how tough the job market can be.

New research, jointly produced by the Australian Human Rights Commission and the Australian Human Resources Institute, shows that ageism is on the rise, with one-quarter of employers now classifying workers aged 51 to 55 as “older.” Just two years ago, only 10% of employers held that view.

For experienced Australians who want—or need—to keep working, this shift is creating real challenges, both emotionally and financially.

Why Older Job Seekers Are Overlooked

Ageism in hiring often hides behind polite phrases like “we’re looking for a cultural fit” or “we’ve decided to go in another direction.” In reality, many recruiters and employers carry unspoken biases, such as:

  • Assumptions about digital skills – Believing over-50s lack digital fluency or struggle with modern work tools.
  • Doubts about adaptability – Thinking older workers are less able to adjust to new systems, processes, or technologies.
  • Concerns about tenure – Questioning whether an older hire will stay long enough to justify the investment in training.
  • Stereotypes about innovation – Assuming older employees may resist change or bring less fresh thinking to the table.
  • Team culture misconceptions – Fearing it will be harder for older hires to integrate into teams dominated by younger staff.

Career coaches recommend taking proactive steps to counter these perceptions:

  • Modernise your résumé – Focus on recent skills, measurable results, and achievements.
  • Strengthen your online presence – Update your LinkedIn profile and engage in professional discussions.
  • Invest in upskilling – Especially in technology, digital tools, and emerging industry trends.
  • Expand your network – Attend industry events, connect with recruiters, and join professional groups.
  • Seek mentorship opportunities – Both as a mentor and mentee, to stay connected and relevant.

Even with these strategies, many older Australians still face repeated rejection—not due to a lack of skills or value, but because of entrenched age-related biases in the hiring process. Overcoming this requires not only individual effort but also a cultural shift in how employers view and value experience.

The Financial Toll of Job Hunting in Your 50s and 60s

Losing work—or struggling to find it—later in life can be devastating. At this stage, many Australians are still paying off mortgages, helping kids through university, or caring for ageing parents.

With fewer working years left, any gap in employment can put retirement plans at risk. Some people resort to dipping into superannuation early, which can reduce long-term financial security.

For homeowners aged 60 or over, a Reverse Mortgage can be a valuable option. It lets you unlock some of your home’s equity without selling or moving out.

A Reverse Mortgage can help if you:

✅ Want to clear debts or cover living costs.
✅ Hope to fund home improvements to make aging in place easier.
